From a CNN headline:
Militants fire on U.S. Embassy in Kabul from a building they took over a few blocks away, U.S. and Afghan officials say
From BBC:
It appears to be a complex operation with a number of suicide bombers involved, says the BBC's Quentin Sommerville in the Afghan capital.
A number of attackers have taken refuge in a partly-built high-rise building overlooking the area, from where they are coordinating their actions and exchanging sporadic gunfire with Afghan forces, adds our correspondent.
US marines were seen on the roof of the US embassy assessing the situation and checking their defences were robust, adds our correspondent.
Western security sources said Nato's International Security Assistance Force headquarters was also targeted, although an Isaf spokesman would not confirm the information.
From MSNBC
At least six loud explosions were interspersed with gunfire around the middle of the day.
NBC News reported that two suicide bombers detonated their vests in Abdul Haq Square, but said there was no word yet on casualties.
Several Taliban attackers armed with rocket-propelled grenades, AK-47s and suicide vests have taken up positions in Kabul, near the embassy district, to attack government buildings, a spokesman for the insurgents said.
"The primary targets of the attackers are the intelligence agency building and a ministry," Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters by phone from an undisclosed location.
This year has been the bloodiest in Afghanistan since 2001. Time to get out ? The war against Al-Qaida is to a large degree won, the war against Taliban can hardly be won.
