It's plain to me now that if John Kerry had won, we would never have given him a chance. Because too many of us would never have given him a chance.
We would have ripped him to shreds if he could not work miracles with a Senate now including five new neocon toadies.
We would have crucified him, as we're already doing now, for the 87 billion dollars and the gay marriage gaffe. Never mind that a closer look shows something quite different.
What if what we demand of our political leaders, is beyond the reach of even the most advanced social and political skills?
What if it's not altogether their responsibility to inspire us? What is, somewhere along the line, we're supposed to let ourselves be inspired?
Right now, do we sound much different from the Republicans? Especially since in every flip-flop and gay marriage jibe, I hear the same underlying need for simplification. The same discomfort with any way of making sense of human behavior, than the speediest and easiest way.
Yes, we're all disappointed. I guess, at least, Kerry has a face. He's got 100 percent name recognition. He's convenient.
