The largest association of microbiologists is the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) which has almost 40,000 members with about a third of those in other countries. Its upcoming 10th Annual BIODEFENSE and Emerging Diseases Research Meeting in a couple weeks shows how the 2001 Amerithrax attack and the continuing Security State mentality continue to warp America’s priorities.
The Agriculture Department has listened to the requests of the Christmas Tree industry and is instituting a $00.15 fee on each tree sold or imported for those businesses selling or importing more than $500. worth of trees each year. FOX "NEWS" is spewing the false outrage of Heritage Foundation hack David Addington about the outrageous new tax imposed on Christmas by the Obama administration.
There has been a long and contentious struggle to make sure that Corporations in America do not game immigration policy by filling jobs for skilled workers with immigrants at lower wages. Besides making continued legal residence in the US dependent on a particular job (like indentured servitude) this practice skews the balance in favor of the biggest companies with the most creative lies from the Human Resources department. Yet another republican ploy to extend this in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields was just published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
The RKBA group probably knows I am no fan of possession of hand guns by the general public although I'm not opposed to rifles and shotguns. But Mansfield Frazier's blog in the current Cool Cleveland has a decidedly unique look at the gun culture of the inner city youth and a possible solution to some of the problems. Frazier is also a contributor to "The Daily Beast" so you may have read some of his work.
An article in press from PNAS has a rather definitive model of where different fractions of hydrocarbons go after release from deep sea incidents like the Deep Water Horizon disaster.
Dear Mr. President,
A substantial number of Daily Kos diaries have been written on Lyme Disease. Many have discussed the debilitating aftermath to this infection whether or not it was correctly diagnosed in the first place. Other diaries have been on the medical/political circus surrounding the physicians that treat the lingering symptoms vs those that think it is malpractice to treat an unproven chronic infection. Now a very interesting study is going to reinvigorate the entire controversy.
Why is it bad news for Gov. Perry when Science Magazine reports that the head of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, Peter Hotez, is leaving George Washington University and moving the 20 plus person vaccine development team to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston? Part of the problem for Perry is that Hotez is setting up the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor's College of Medicine in Houston's Texas Medical Center because this expert in tropical diseases finds Texas interesting "Because there is a lot of poverty; it has the highest rates of parasitic and neglected infections anywhere in the U.S." He continues "In 2008 I described a group of six neglected diseases that are common both in African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans. In addition, dengue has emerged along the Gulf Coast. That's another rationale for being based in Houston".
President Obama and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz jumped the shark in over done Weiner bashing. Both called for Anthony Weiner's resignation because they claim he can no longer represent his constituents in the manner he was elected to do. This lowers the bar so low that any Representative who is medically incapacitated and unable to perform his/her duties should "step aside"
As America looked on in shock and horror, Wisconsin Republican Senators steamrolled a bill stripping rights from tens of thousands of Wisconsin citizens. They had been discussing this action and planned it before doing it. Whether measured by the standard requirement of 24 hours notice be given or the emergency two hour notice required by Wisconsin law before convening such a meeting, the legislators there clearly broke state law. And under Wisconsin law this is a misdemeanor. So what? Why care about a misdemeanor that has fines from $25 to $300?

Cleveland's The Plain Dealer ran an interview with Governor Kasich today that provides yet more bogus reasons to throw Unions under the bus including promised state and local savings annually of more than $1,000,000,000 (billion with a B) if the collective bargaining rights of public employees were castrated. He promises to explain all in March when his 2012 budget is unveiled. He also claimed his only contact with Wisconsin Governor Walker has been to talk trash on Ohio and Wisconsin college sports. Adding "We don't sit around and talk and plot." Contrast this with Walker's claim to the ersatz Koch brother that he and Kasisch speak with each other almost every day. Kasich is also claiming any appearance that calls to limit collective bargaining rights of Ohio public employees is connected with what is happening in other states is "only because of Happenstance". Let's pause for a good laugh and then continue.
Pelosi said impeachment was off the table and Patrick Fitzgerald lets Rove off the hook. There are no criminal trials for waterboarding, illegal wiretaps, or for war profiteering.
