(Necessary disclaimer: the below is just my opinion and not based on any public disclosed diagnoses that I'm aware of. Basically, I'm just writing this as a way to vent during a very long, scary election season.)
(Update: Just to be clear, I wrote this only as an exercise to try put myself in the mind of a conservative voter and why we may not see too many of them publicly denounce Trump. It is only meant to be a thought experiment.)
Conservative ideals or the United States of America? This is the dilemma facing Republicans and conservatives right now. The next president will almost assuredly determine the makeup of the Supreme Court for the next few decades. This week, the GOP is starting to come to terms with the fact that they nominated an actual, no-shit crazy person for president. There’s no pivot. There’s no moderation. Trump is almost certainly a textbook example of rampant narcisstic personality disorder. His entire worldview is defined by proving his greatness to the world. He can’t imagine what it is like to walk in someone else’s shoes and the only way to get hm to follow advice is through extreme flattery and convincing him that it was his idea in the first place. Threaten his self-image and he’ll lash-out without any thought of the consequences. There is no strategy or long-term planning. There is no interest in policy. All that matters is dominating others and sucking in the worship of others.
His reaction to the Khans is just the first jolt Republican voters are going to have to face. He is getting more attention than ever now and as he is publicly lambasted in the media for his indefensible comments, he’ll attack his critics with even worst responses. He’s been able to live in a bubble of sycophants and yes-men for decades and now he’s being subjected to humiliation like never before. He especially craves respect from other billionaires. Bloomberg and Cuban’s attacks on him are going to be especially painful.
My my point is, conservative voters are going to be forced to watch their best hope for not just the presidency, but the Supreme Court devolve into a quivering day-glo orange pile of ragey goo. Those who aren't cultists will be forced realize the price of conservatism might be the country they love. A Clinton presidency will guarantee a pro-choice, gay-marriage, non-Christian, etc Supreme Court, probably for the rest of their lives. However, it also means a country who is being lead by someone who isn't’ going to anger all of our allies and possibly start WWIII because someone in Finland’s parliament insulted his hair.
I have no sympathy for them. They created this monster without giving any thought whether they could control it. However I can appreciate the enormity of this decision. If the liberal version of Donald Trump* were the democratic nominee, how bad would it have to get to vote for a Romney, a Kasich, or even a Cruz? At what point would we be able to sacrifice things like civil rights, women’s health, etc to try to make sure the world doesn't blow up? I’ve been thinking about this for awhile and I still can’t answer it. I'm just glad we don’t have to. This is the nightmare that Republicans (who aren’t in denial) are facing.
*I tried to think of an an equivalent celebrity, but since Trump has campioned Liberal issues in the past I figured he’d do.
