Robin Kelly now leads the field with 26 percent of all likely voters, putting her in a strong position heading into the campaign’s final weeks. Former Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson has slipped badly into second place at 22 percent as a result of the punding from the Independence USA PAC. State Senator Toi Hutchinson is in third place with 20 percent as she tries to distance herself from the NRA 'A' rating. Alderman Anthony Beale (10 percent), former Congressman Mel Reynolds (5 percent) and health care executive Joyce Washington (2 percent) also register support.
Robin Kelly will be listed on the very top of a very crowded ballot for the Feb. 26, 2013 primary election day and I should add that early voting starts on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013. The advantage is incalculable. As I said, a very crowded field of Democrats. 16 of them.
That, I will admit, is pure luck. That is, being on the very top of the ballot. Well, not all luck, because the Robin Kelly campaign people had to be sure to get in line on time in order to get into the lottery for the very top of the ballot. Great organization and great planning. After all, luck is a residue of design.
I digress.
Then there is the fundraising. Robin Kelly raised $200,000 before December 31, according to a filing with the Federal Election Commission. The campaign has continued raising money with many fundraising events.
Then there was the Markos Moulitsas of the Daily Kos endorsement which came with an appeal for money through Act Blue. That number at the moment is $62,201. It constantly rises with your great help. To me, the more amazing number is the number of donors, which at the moment is 2,718. That number constantly rises due to your great help and due to the constant encouragement of Markos.
One more piece of great news: the latest poll.
Robin Kelly, candidate for the seat vacated by Jesse Jackson Jr., is leading in the latest poll conducted by Gerstein Bocian Agne Strategies. With just three weeks before the special primary election for Congress in Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District, former state representative Robin Kelly has leapfrogged the competition and moved into first place.
