One of the big lies that came out of the Bush administration is the notion that "no one could have prevented" the attacks on New York and Washington seven years ago this morning. Quite simply, had one of the security people at Logan Airport said, "Excuse me, Mr. Atta, but you can't take that box cutter onboard," history would be different. But putting the blame on people making minimum wage is to miss a much bigger point.
No, the real fault lies elsewhere. The Bush administration and the Republican Party are responsible for the failures of that day, responsible for the deaths, the destruction, the shattered lives, and the paranoia that ensued from coast to coast. It's their fault, and I hold them responsible for failing in the first duty of government -- to protect the governed. They are not the party of national security; they failed at that job. We progressives should beat them over the head with the shame of their failure every day for the next generation.
