After spending a day with Gene Stilp on his home turf, one thing becomes apparent – never count him out.
Stilp, 61, the Democratic candidate in the 11th Congressional District of Pennsylvania surprised many political observers with his victory over Wilkes-Barre attorney Bill Vinsko in Tuesday’s primary.
Those same people might be eager to dismiss Stilp’s chances against first-term Republican incumbent Lou Barletta of Hazleton in November, but don’t try to sell that to Stilp or the people of Middle Paxton Township in Dauphin County.
When the GOP-controlled state legislature approved the new redistricting map, the 11th District was believed to be a safe haven for the Republican candidate. And with the Democratic areas of Dauphin County surgically removed from the newly redrawn district, it appeared that a GOP candidate would be favored.
