Yes failed, since the constitution was amended by the republicans to prevent a democrat from having multiple terms as president we have seen how the wealthy and corporations have controlled the office of president as well as the elected office holder.
By limiting the presidential office holder to a term of only two terms created a political office that is not a position that can create a thriving and active democracy but instead a democracy where the branch of congress fights internally and the court is owned by oligarchs where laws are make to benefit the rich.
Had the president stood for election every four years if the enactment of the 22nd amendment had not take place, would we be even pondering this question?
The only reason for the 22nd amendment wasn’t founded with the belief that the president was intended to only have a two term presidency; it was solely enacted to keep a popular president from holding office long enough to set and create an agenda that benefits the electorate. The electorate who are you and I and find that the programs and laws promoted by a popular president truly allow the nation to become prosperous and healthy.
Looking at the presidents since Truman, we can predict with a fair amount of certainty who might have been president. Eisenhower would still have served two terms. Age and health were becoming factors in his life. Kennedy would have won the election, the assignation would have taken place, and Johnson would not have had a second term and would have held his peace about Nixon’s treason.
Nixon would has still had his failed presidency Ford would have had his un-elected presidency and Carter his one term.
Ronald Reagan would have enjoyed a third term, with GHW bush actually running the last term while the party hid Reagan’s Alzheimer’s. This would have been the republicans best hope for a candidate who would have served more than two terms as president.
Bill Clinton would have defeated GHW Bush in his attempt to be elected. I believe that Bill Clinton would be so popular that we would be watching the first president to run for a seventh term.
Yeah I know, there is no science to back this. But the speculation is plausible given how history has run its course. Gulf war one would not have led to Gulf war two. The attacks on the world trade buildings would not have happen and we would be a prosperous country. Of course this is again a projection based on the history of the Clinton administration.
Unfortunately we now face an election cycle where our ability to keep jobs, to raise our standard of living, to secure a profitable future is greatly at stake. Our country is rife with hate and prejudices, where a blind eye is turned to corruption and our government has become an oligarchy. Our President is influenced by major corporations to pass a trade deal that will impoverish millions of Americans and undermine his own climate initiatives.
we have to place pressure on his office, a term limited office, and office where the president is not bound to listening to the people, we the people, and act on the desires of the people. before term limits he was the champion of the people. without him there is no one.
The fate of this grand experiment has been orchestrated with the enactment of the 22nd amendment. And we are left to restore the American way.
