My agony about the election and the state of the country now is as great as anybody's. Each scrap of news out of Ohio ignites a brilliant spark of hope that it could all have a Hollywood ending. Oh, the looks on the faces of Bush & Co. in my imagination as they have to turn everything over to Kerry and Edwards...
But then what? Kerry will face not merely a hostile Republican majority in Congress, but an enraged one. The political climate will go from rancorous to poisonous. Harry Reid's investigations will get nowhere. The cause of obstructing and exposing Republican priorities will become muddied. Bush himself will be seen by some as a victim of partisan maneuvering (and could run again in 2008!). The GOP will shoot itself in the foot as usual, but now will blame President Kerry for everything. DNC reform will stall. In short, we'll win the White House battle but lose the propaganda war (and the 2008 election).
...Unless smarter people than me can think of how best to navigate that minefield...
