North Carolina now has had a record 1,479,270 in person early votes, as 195,003 more votes were cast Tuesday at 357 locations, besting the previous daily high of 182,518. The final 2004 total was 984,294. The final 2008 number should exceed 2 million. Early voting ends Saturday afternoon.
UPDATE 10:20 pm EDT: 210,925 more early votes cast Wednesday.
Blacks made up 26.33% of the Tuesday total, down from the 26.87% who voted early Monday. Both numbers greatly exceed the 21.4% of registered voters who are Black. Already, 32.96% of Black registered voters in North Carolina have voted early, compared with 19.61% of Whites. 29.37% of the registered Democrats have already voted, compared with 19.42% of the registered Republicans.
100,089 Democrats voted Tuesday compared with 97,459 Monday, while 59,148 Republicans cast votes Tuesday up from the 52,428 of Monday. 51,350 Blacks voted Tuesday compared with 50,453 Monday.
