Is the history of the war in Iraq already written? This is the center of the debate in Washington right now. Anyone who knows anything about history knows that it is not set in stone a mere three years after it occurs. History tends to evolve as new facts become available. However, the GOP wants you to believe that the "history" of the war in Iraq is written and nothing new can be learned about it.
You all know the first draft (the GOP's Iraq 1.0 version) of this history is black and white. Saddam had WMD and was working with Al Qaida, the terrorists who killed three thousand innocent people on 9/11. He had to be stopped before he gave the deadliest weapons known to man to the evil-doers who attacked us.
Pretty simple, huh? Cut and dry. No questions necessary. Except that we now know it is NOT that simple or cut and dry. We are still writing the history of why we went to war. If we continue to let the President's supporters frame the debate, we might as well just fax the GOP talking point memos straight to the publishers of history textbooks. Is that what children fifty years from now should learn about our times?
