I grew up in a large family that had no interest or resources for travel vacations; then spent most of my adult life as a struggling single woman with no extra money for international travel, myself.
So I regret to say, although I've read widely, I've been outside of the U.S. merely twice in my life.
A trip to Victoria and Vancouver, B.C., Canada, from Seattle hardly counts, although it was delightful.
The other lasted 7 weeks, hopping non-stop around six countries and five foreign languages; the sort of travel vacation that leaves you needing a resting vacation. It was wonderful--even though it coincided with 9-11. Illustrated Travelogue.
I would've skipped Greece, especially Athens, and spent more time elsewhere, but my husband insisted. As it turned out, I loved the Greek part of the trip. That was one of many surprises.
