What? Progressives and Conservatives?
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats, living together... mass hysteria!
David Sirota wrote a great article for In These Times:
How does today's Republican Party fit Wall Street bankers under the same tent as blue-collar America? How does a party unify those who seek to bathe corporations in taxpayer cash with those who want to curtail government spending?
If recent events in Congress are any indication, increasingly it doesn't.
It's popular to discuss how John McCain hates his party. But you don't hear much about all the other Republicans who are also getting sick and tired of Those In Charge hijacking their party. And there are plenty of them.
Just about every time I've asked a republican acquaintance what it is they believe in that makes them a republican, they tell me something along the lines of "I belive in smaller government." Well, the Bush clan sure doesn't. Yes, they cut taxes out the wazoo, but all the money comes from the Americans of 2087. Spending increases like mad, and money is given away to wealthy international conglomerates like gobstoppers on halloween.
Yes, there's still a faction of the republican party that actually believes in what their constituents think they stand for. And sooner or later, they're going to be mad as hell, and I doubt if they plan to take it anymore.
