I am in the middle of Jean Edward Smith's amazing biography of FDR. I am about 1/3 of the way through with the book, and I have been struck by many of the things I have read. The first thing that struck me, and something worth writing further about, is the importance of experience. When FDR was undersecretary of the Navy under Woodrow Wilson he made contacts within the country, but more importantly, throughout Europe. When you realize that by the time of WWII, Roosevelt and Churchill had already known each other personally for 20 years, it explains their mutual success.
But that is not what this article is about. Sitting on the train this morning, I got to 1929. Specifically, October 29, 1929. Black Monday. What I read shocked me, and I believe it should be the focus of Democratic talking points for the next month and is something that the media should immediately focus on.
