If the current legislature gets their way Arizona will have a "Third World education and economic infrastructure."
Below is a letter from President Michael Crow of Arizona State University regarding our legislature's proposed budget cuts. This was forwarded to me by someone I know who attends at ASU. This letter was sent out to all faculty, staff and students.
Both University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University are facing similar cuts. The K-12 funding over the next 2 fiscal years, including the current one, is also facing similar cuts. Good jobs depend on a strong education system. Employers want well educated employees, so, long term, this is very bad for Arizona.
The situation is compounded by Janet Napalitano's appointment to Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. In past years when the legislative leads proposed draconian cuts such as these, Janet would veto the bills.
Arizona's law provides that the Republican Secretary of State, Jan Brewer, ascends to the Governor's office. Ms. Brewer has already been sworn in as of today and she is inclined to agree with the Republican leaders in the AZ House and Senate.
If you care about education in Arizona it's time to speak up and let the legislature know that this is unacceptable.
