Ever since Obama threw his presidential hat in the ring, we've been hearing constantly about Obama's skill at speeches, and his uncanny ability to captivate and inspire an audience. The conventional wisdom attributes his success to his oratory skills, and his eloquence in conveying his message of hope and unity. The counter-argument the corporate-media pundits enthusiastically employ is that Obama is a "great speaker, but his substance is lacking" - every time I hear this in the context of an Obama vs. McCain campaign, I grind my teeth just a little closer to the gum line.
