I attended the Anti-war rally last Saturday in San Francisco and of course I perused all the buttons and bumperstickers available. It seems to me that there was a load of W's with a red bar through it and "Impeach Bush" stickers and "Get rid of Monkey Boy" pins. But what occured to me was "who are we talking to?".
Sure, we all believe that after all is said and done we were on the right side of the argument and most conservatives look like jackasses right about now, but how does that bring them over to our way of thinking? Then it occured to me, " we're all plugged in, we all have computers and printers and why the hell don't we start our own debate courtesy of the bumpers of our cars." I'm sure most of us have lived in fear of getting our high mileage vehicles keyed in response to our common sense opinions voiced until now, but the times are changing. Now is the time to be creative and let fly our imaginations in terms of how we can make people think about the issues that confront us. A few well turned phrases can instill skeptism and doubt in the kool aid drinkers that sit in bumper to bumper.

The debate over what was gained and what was lost in the compromise neglects one important component, the fact that things change. The strategy of the GOP has been to hit hard and fast before people even realized what the consequences are. Now the compromise may only be a speed bump to a larger conflict, but as we can see in the upcoming stem cell battle, the terms of the conflict are in flux. Just look at Bush and the GOP congress' poll numbers and you realize they're gambling the whole pot with a weak hand. Does anyone really think Iraq, the economy, and the ethic scandals are going to ease up over the next few months? If not, the compromise looks more like the first blow in a battle that reverses the inexplicable momentum of this car crash of a presidency. Yes we need to put out a positive Democrat agenda, but there ain't been a lot of good news coming out for the other side lately.
