NASA and human spaceflight have rarely if ever been a partisan issue. Back in the day, James Webb shrewdly made sure that plenty of NASA money got spread around to major states like California, Texas, and Florida with large Congressional holdings. Consequently, space issues cut across party lines. But now.
Well, I fear NASA is about to become a major partisan issue. There are just as many Republicans who care nothing about NASA as there are who do support NASA. However, if media reports are true and Constellation is going to be scrapped, then President Obama maybe handing Republicans another sharp-edged wedge issue on which to hammer. And this is what is truely puzzling, if there was one area on which to show some bipartisanship and support, it was NASA. A program that employed mainly contractors from private commercial space companies in highly technical, skilled, well-paying jobs.
