Taste potentiators, as they're called, are not entirely new to the food industry. The ingredient list on a can of soup or a hunk of processed cheese sometimes includes a substance called IMP, a few entries below MSG, or sodium glutamate. MSG is to umami what sugar is to sweet: the taste [of protein] in its purest, most familiar form. IMP's singular virtue is its synergy with MSG. Like the sweet receptor, the umami receptor has multiple binding sites. IMP attaches to one spot, MSG to another; together, they fit so snugly that their effect is multiplied. Add a little IMP to a soup with MSG in it, and the umami taste will increase roughly tenfold. "It's like a hearing aid," Zoller told me. It turns up the volume.
DAVID Cameron flaunts his green credentials by cycling to work - but there's a flunky following behind in a gas-guzzling motor carrying his shoes and briefcase. The Tory leader, desperate to hijack the green vote at next Thursday's local elections, has spent weeks trumpeting the fact that he pedals the five traffic-clogged miles from his home to Westminster. The born-again environmentalist even blasted mums for using their cars on the school run instead of walking. Just days later Mirror snappers watched as he leapt onto his bicycle outside his West London home at 8am and pedalled off, stopping only to pose for photos. But after a few minutes his official car, a high-powered Lexus GS450-H, pulled up and the driver was handed a briefcase, a shirt and a pair of highly-polished shoes.
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center said yesterday that researchers have successfully rebuilt human bladders for seven young patients - a dramatic new phase in the field of tissue engineering. .... Atala's findings are reported online today by The Lancet, a prestigious independent medical journal based in New York and London. Atala's bladder research began in 1990. His study was based on the replacement of parts of the human bladder in seven patients ages 4 to 19 who had poor bladder functions caused by spina bifida, a congenital birth defect. The treatment was performed on the patients from 1999 through 2001 at the Children's Hospital in Boston, part of the Harvard Medical School, where Atala was the director of Tissue Engineering and Cellular Therapeutics.

Doctors on the scene are seeing some cases of diarrhea and skin infections. Mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans appeared today on CNN saying that mosquitoes are breeding there and will be feeding on dead bodies and spreading disease. He is wrong; mosquitoes are not attracted to dead bodies, since they feed on blood. For further information, the following links are provided as a public service:
[Interfax story] A 20-year-old man showing bird flu symptoms has been hospitalized in Kazakhstan's Pavlodar region, where 600 domestic geese died between 20-30 Jul 2005 as a result of an outbreak of the disease in the area. .... The 1st deaths of birds in Golubovka were registered a week [4th week July 2005] ago, Yersain Aitzhanov, chief of the Irtysh district's emergency situations department, told Interfax. A quarantine order has been imposed in the village. "All necessary measures are being taken: the territory is being ploughed, additional fences have been built around the farm, and a ban has been introduced on the delivery of poultry products and eggs from the village," Aitzhanov said.
Last week, press aides at the White House made a furious round of phone calls: a number of major newspapers had printed that John Roberts was a member of the secretive far-right Federalist Society. Roberts denied "recalling" that he was a member, and so the White House demanded a correction. Retractions were printed. But just this morning The Washington Post released an internal directory proving Roberts served on the steering committee of the Washington Federalist Society Chapter.1 Read More
Since January, Adams[, who has focal dystonia] has been sketching and drawing "Dilbert" using an interactive display developed largely for graphic artists. Produced by Wacom Technology, based in Vancouver, Wash., the Cintiq 21UX LCD tablet allows artists to use a stylus on a pressure-sensitive computerized tablet. .... Adams said he bought the product, which retails for about $2,500, and has no financial ties to the company. But Wacom posted Adams's photo on its Web site, along with the photos of other graphic artists who use the device.

Mecklenburg County commissioners voted to add "sexual orientation" to the county's nondiscrimination policy, over the vehement objections of Republicans and after hours of debate that went late into Tuesday night. The new policy means the county cannot discriminate in hiring and personnel decisions on the basis of sexual orientation, adding that to a list that includes race, color, sex, religion, national origin and age.

"Essentially it comes down to who do you believe - the state chairman, who says last year was a great year even though we were the only state in the South to lose a GOP majority, and when we lost Patrick Ballantine's (state Senate) seat to a lesbian?" [Robinson] said. "I don't think last year was a great year." Robinson said that the party can galvanize Republican voters - and donors - by focusing on issues such as illegal immigration, the defense of marriage and corruption in state government. He said that Fern Shubert, a conservative former state senator from Union County who lost in the GOP primary for governor last year, has agreed to join the staff at state Republican headquarters if he is elected chairman.

There are those who complain that Congress does not care about the concerns of the little guy. But those people do not attend Alaska Christian College. The school, founded five years ago and affiliated with the Evangelical Covenant Church, has 37 students. It is not accredited and does not grant degrees. It offers, instead, certificates in biblical studies at the end of a student's first year and certificates in biblical and general studies to those who complete a second. Over the past two years, Congress has given the school more than $1 million.

Some members of East Waynesville Baptist Church voted the nine members out at a recent scheduled deacon meeting, which turned into an impromptu business meeting, according to congregants. Chan Chandler, pastor of East Waynesville, had been exhorting his congregation since October to support his political views or leave the church, said Selma Morris, a 30-year member of the church. "He preached a sermon on abortion and homosexuality, then said if anyone there was planning on voting for John Kerry, they should leave," she said. .... Valerie Thornton, a spokeswoman for the Internal Revenue Service, said she could not comment on the East Waynesville situation specifically, but noted that "in general if a church engages in partisan politics it could put their tax-exempt status in jeopardy."
