The greeks' great army surrounded the city of Troy, but without the leadership of Achilles, they could not defeat the weaker Trojans, protected behind the great walls of Troy. This was an example of HUBRIS. But nobody thinks Obama has been "hanging back" because of hubris. He is too cagey for that. A better analogy is Ali's "rope-a-dope" strategy; but the best analogy is a tag team wrestling match.
Many pundits agree that the fate of Afghanistan, the success or failure of US intervention, will depend on the Afghans themselves. The US goal is to "stand up" the Afghan government forces so that they can resist the Taliban forces. Has anyone noticed that our "goal" presumes that the current weakness of the government forces is due to insufficient training, or recruiting? Nonsense.
On this anniversary of last year's financial meltdown media are reminding us that the disaster occurred because the "system is broken" and that it has not yet been fixed. This is quite misleading. All the evidence shows that the current system is not merely "broken", it is crooked. The system has been corrupted and manipulated dishonestly by those in the highest positions.
"This exchange will take effect in four years, which will give us time to do it right. In the meantime, for those Americans who can't get insurance today because they have pre-existing medical conditions, we will immediately offer low-cost coverage that will protect you against financial ruin if you become seriously ill."
Recently, McCain has been pounding the populist drum hard, attacking the fat cats on Wall Street and in Washington. This is despite the fact that his record is anything but populist. Has the leopard changed his spots? This is an issue Obama should capitalize on now. An effective, soundbite friendly way to do this is for Obama to include a humorous attack on this reborn McCain.
General Petreus declined to provide his questioners with a definition of "winning" in Iraq, but of course we can't withdraw until we have won. Then John McCain says that his comments about maintaining some US forces in Iraq for a very long time is based on the idea that we will "win" first. Since these guys are unwilling to provide their definition of winning, I will presume to provide their definition for them, so that they will be forced to clarify their position.
So now one of the biggest issues dividing Americans is whether we should tolerate gay marriage because "breaks God's rules?". Weren't all of these God's rules not so long ago?
The arguement that legal divorce is a threat to the institution of marriage is more believable than that gay marriage might. RMJ
