The first wave of volunteers has hit the ground in South Dakota, and by the looks of things, the DCCC is loaded for bear.
Thanks to the South Dakota Republican Party you can see some of the vehicles they've already secured for GOTV efforts. 21st Century Democrats, who played a key role in Johnson's win last cycle, has some of their fantastic field organizers on the ground already. Additionally, the word on the street is that Diedrich's internal polls show him down nine points. Corroborating that story, Diedrich launched a new and desperate negative ad that compares Herseth to Hillary Clinton and calls her a <gasp> "Washington Lawyer." Unless a candidate is down by a significant margin, conventional wisdom is that you pull your negatives and put positives back up for the last four or five days (candidates generally can't change their ad traffic after COB Friday). Additionally, the NRCC press shop is quietly trying to lower expectations among reporters, saying, ridiculously, that the real battle is November and this race has no national implications.
Finally, as noted in Greg's Diary the big story of the day is the release of former Governor/Congressman/Felon Bill Janklow's secret pardon list. Given that Janklow was released from jail last week, and now we're finding out how Republican nepotism and favoritism works, this just isn't a good day for Larry Diedrich.
