I've been obsessed with the coverage (as well as one can be with no TV - thank God for Twitter) and just have a few observations...
Nothing like watching a disaster occur in slow motion in real time. We watched it coming, we were told it would be worse than we could imagine, and it was. The pictures from space, the meteorological reports were terrifying, awesome and strangely beautiful at times. But the sight of a storm the length of the North American Continent was truly unbelievable, until you saw it in real life.
Thank God so many people did heed warnings, did evacuate low lying areas, did seek shelter, did prepare in advance, Didn't panic.
So far only 10 dead in New York ... six times that number in the Caribbean. That says something mighty strong about being prepared. Yes the numbers will go up, as the storm isn't finished yet. But with tens of millions of people affected the loss of life number is equally unbelievable (but in a good way).
Thank Mr. Obama for being smart and strong - he's put practicality and expertise in front of politics. He hired a FEMA director who knows his shit instead of a hack appointee. He's cut through all the governmental BS to get the job done.
As have all the governors and governmental officials in all the states. Impressed with Govs. Bloomberg and Christie - not my favorite people by any stretch of the imagination. Both of them doing what's necessary to keep their people safe and eschew politics and do their jobs.
And then there's Cory Booker, action hero! He is a model of what local governance can be like in the age of Twitter and Social Media. Responding directly to constituents to offer calmness, advice, and hands-on help all through the day and night. My favorite tweet of his was a response to someone who asked about how his hair was holding up and he tweeted back something like "its receded, but the water hasn't. stay safe". I kept hearing his tweets in Vin Diesel's voice in my head because I'm sure that Mr. Diesel will be playing Mr. Booker in some movie, someday soon.
And then there's Mr. Romney who is flapping around in the background trying to be relevant. Please God, keep him in the background. We don't need anyone who lacks seriousness, vision or common decency in a role of power and governance.
