The Oregon Christian Coalition is calling off its bid to gather signatures for a recall of the four Multnomah County commissioners. who supported licensing gay marriages in Oregon. Yay!
Supporters of a campaign to recall two members of the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners have pulled the plug on their efforts after failing to meet Monday's signature-gathering deadline.
John Belgarde, the executive director of the Oregon Christian Coalition, served as the chief petitioner in the effort to gather enough signatures to get a recall election on the ballot against county Chairwoman Diane Linn and Commissioner Lisa Naito.
Belgarde and his supporters also were gathering signatures to try to recall commissioners Serena Cruz and Maria Rojo de Steffey. Supporters said they were angry with the lack of public process when the four officials changed the county's policy on granting marriage licenses to same-sex couples earlier this year. The fifth board member, Commissioner Lonnie Roberts, was not involved.
