It's a simple sentence:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident :
"That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness..."
And another:
"We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
Community, equality, justice, peace, security, happiness, and liberty for all people were the values our Founding Fathers sought to make manifest through our government. And all of us who grew up and through the cultural atmosphere informed by those values share them. We might not think about them, but they inform us and define who we think we are. We take them for granted and that's why we are in danger of losing them.
