Prince Harry witnessed a war crime in Afghanistan

Really. UK newspaper the Mail reports that Prince Harry witnessed a war crime by U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. Really. Excerpt:

Prince Harry was no more than 220 yards away when a US trooper standing aboard an armoured vehicle cocked a .50 calibre machine gun and fired successive bursts at Afghan shepherds tending their goats, The Mail on Sunday can reveal. The shocking incident, which was confirmed last night by the Ministry of Defence, triggered a war crimes investigation by US military police. It took place on Harry’s first frontline tour of Afghanistan, which, until today, has been shrouded in secrecy. . . .
According to a British eye- witness the three shepherds were peacefully minding their own business when they were engaged. Given the force of the heavy machine gun rounds it is likely they suffered serious or fatal injuries, though their bodies were never recovered.

This would have happened in 2007. Note that although the story says the M.P.s investigated, I am unaware that anyone has been prosecuted for this murder, nor that any investigation has been publicly acknowledged. I wonder if the U.S. corporate media will bother to report this? So far I haven't seen any mention of it.

We'll never know how many atrocities U.S. forces committed in Afghanistan, with total impunity. But the Afghans have a pretty good idea.

Completely nucking futz, as a matter of fact. The "reporter" Julie Rovner on Morning Edition today committed what I would call an egregious act of journalistic malpractice except that it's an absolutely typical, conventional, standard example of the current practice of journalism. In this case the damage happens to be public understanding of the controversies over Medicare.

And we generally feel bad about it. But I haven't heard anybody complain about the eradication of smallpox. Now the Carter Center says we are very close to eradicating the Guinea Worm, the parasite Dracunculus medenisis, which just 15 years ago afflicted about 3 1/2 million people in Africa and Asia. It causes severe pain and disability, and it's just about the yuckiest thing you can think of.

I am just aghast at the actions of the Essex County, Massachusetts District Attorney who is prosecuting a mother for attempted murder because she failed to administer chemotherapy to her young son, who later died of lymphoma.

That probably sounds pretty awful but here are the facts. . .

It seems to be a pathological aversion to self-examination. As you are unlikely to know from the U.S. corporate media, which has largely ignored the story, the UK is currently holding a public inquiry into the Iraq war. I think it would be way fun to do that here, but not going to happen. Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, who was head of the British spy agency MI5, has just testified. You've probably already heard about the new study in Pediatrics that finds a link between urinary levels of metabolites of organophosphate pesticides and diagnosis of ADHD in children. I've been saying forever that there is plenty of evidence that chronic exposure to low levels of organophosphates causes neurological harm with behavioral symptoms in humans. We've known this for more than 20 years, but malathion and its cousins are still sprayed all over our crops. (In case you didn't know, these are just somewhat weaker versions of the "nerve gas" invented by Nazi scientists in WWII.)

However, on the very same day, another study came out, in the very same journal, that has been completely ignored.

As Iraqis go to the polls today for what is probably their most important election in memory, I'm posting my usual Sunday news roundup from Iraq Today here on Kos. We still need to pay attention to Iraq -- there are 100,000 U.S. troops there and there's a very good chance they'll get stuck after all. The corporate media in the U.S. pay little attention to Iraq any more and to the extent they do notice the country, they don't understand it. All we're hearing are a lot of platitudes about brave Iraqis defying violence to cast their ballots but the story is much more complicated. I try to develop a fuller picture for you below the fold. The European medical community was always a bit less amped up about the H1N1 "pandemic" than their counterparts here, and they have been much more reflective about the mass hysteria now that it has passed. There are three items in today's BMJ that, unfortunately, are hidden behind the subscription wall. I will summarize.

First, Deputy Editor Tony Delamothe, in the regular Editor's Choice column, writes:

If influenza was a rock band how would it rate its latest release, H1N1? Not too well, I suspect, despite the greatest prepublicity since—well, its previous release. And it all started so promisingly, in Mexico, whose population had been decimated by the very first outbreak of Spanish flu (and smallpox and measles), courtesy of Cortés and his conquistadores.
