1920 -- Baseball's rules committee bans foreign substances and alterations to the ball, thus outlawing the spitball.
As we are all aware, this foreign substance ban only concerned the ball, and not the players, as evidenced by Saturday's (not wholly unexpected) bombshell, also from SI:
