I've gotten into a few heated discussions, some with fellow Kossacks, by saying that Bush could have prevented 9/11. The argument against that statement is that even if the Bush administration had moved heaven and earth in response to the chorus of warnings during the summer of 2001, it still could have happened.
This is true, of course. But to my mind, irrelevant.
When you abrogate your basic responsibilities, you lose the right to complain about bad outcomes.
Sober drivers have the right to rail at the gods about getting into fender benders. Drunk drivers don't.
In this light, I've started to compose my list of impeachable actions.
They are guided by the following principle:
We don't impeach for decisions that don't necessarily turn out well.
We impeach for decisions which lead to predictably bad outcomes.
