Nicholas Kristof wrote an excellent editorial in the NYT today about the glut of money being thrown at "abstinence-only" programs in schools. With everything going on right now it's easy to forget about, but it really is yet another case of the Bush regime blatantly going against its word. His promise, that is, of trimming programs that don't work from the budget is completely counter-intuitive to the support of these programs that have been shown, time and time again, to be ineffective.
More below the fold...
It's easy for me to throw my hands up in the air and just admit these programs are just red meat for the Fundies, but the more I've thought about it the angrier it has made me. It's so frightening to think of how many abortions have happened, how many STDs have been spread, and how many lives have been irreversibly changed because of a lack of education.
So, what's the solution? I call upon my fellow Kossacks to help me out here. It really is criminal that so much money should still go to this. Do I need to write LTEs? I'm just not sure of the best way to proceed.
