yes, we screwed up the election, but now's a time fore healing, for coming together as a nation behind our president, to prove to the world that our constitution works. i really don't think anybody could have anticipated something like this. someday, we'll figure out what went wrong, and that day will come, but for now, it's important to move forward with this new administration.
yes, yes, failures of intelligence and of leadership left our greatest city defenseless against a large-scale attack on american soil by fundamentalist terrorists. sure, we could point the finger of blame, but i don't think there's any way anybody could have anticipated something like this. i'm sure somebody out there can dig up a memo or two saying how we should have seen this coming. but right now, let's let the healing begin. later on, we'll get to the bottom of what went wrong, i swear.
ok, ok, yes, you're right, there really don't seem to have been any weapons of mass destruction in iraq. but everybody thought there were. i don't think there's any way we could have anticipated their not having them, since everybody in the world knew they did, except for, you know, all those lefty war protesters and UN weapons inspectors and all. but i'm pretty sure somebody did. and anyway, what it was about what bringing freedom to an oppressed people, so get off my back. now maybe some mistakes were made, and we're going to look into that just as soon as we have five weeks to spare. promise.
now, look. this is getting ridiculous. how in the heck were we supposed to anticipate something like this, i ask you! sure, you can gripe about the fact that we didn't do anything to shore up the levees, and you can gripe that we didn't provide humanitarian aid in a timely fashion, and you can gripe that nobody in the federal government seemed to know on wednesday what anybody with a tv knew on monday night. but now is not the time for blame, you know. we have to start actually doing some work on this, right? you want us to start working, or do you want to blame us, because you can't have it both ways. i'm sick and tired of all this blaming you people want to do. and besides, it was really the state and local governments' fault, anyway.
accountability isn't about revenge. it's about preventing the next mistake. if the people responsible for all these mistakes, who never take any time to re-examine their approach to running the country, who never regret, who are incapable of learning from their many mistakes... if they once again refuse to be held to account, i shudder to think what the next mistake might be.
