I was never a big fan of the
"build it and they will come" philosophy. It was not my thing. Sure I am known by many, and perceived by even more to be an optimist. Hey, I taught in middle school for heaven's sakes, so yes, a part of me HAD to be an optimist, but more specifically an optimist with a sense of humor. When you are teaching kids for whom the research says, have all brain cell growth go flat from about age 12 thru 16, and are told your students MUST score x, y and z on tests to prove you are doing your job, you have to be an optimist with a sense of humor. And I am counting on my optimistic nature now.
But enough about me.
These are the personal opinions of me, just me. I am just a regular citizen exercising my rights (something I want to be able to do for the rest of my life...which is why this is all so important to me).
I live in CD-5. I live in a red county in a red district, in a state that was red in the last election (but is happily getting to be purplish!) I live just a few miles from Focus on the Family's headquarters. The opponent of Jay Fawcett is a man known as Doug Lamborn. Of all the six republicans who ran, Lamborn is, in my humble opinion, the most extreme. Quite frankly, Mr. Lamborn scares me.
The obvious scares are:
Education: After a career of 38 years in public school, the idea of Lamborn getting to vote on educational issues is frightening: his pro voucher, pro Christian, pro life, pro "intelligent design" stances (these seem to be his self-descriptors, not mine) are all telling. I cannot even fathom any public educator voting for this candidate.
Terrorism and Iraq: I heard him say at a debate with my own ears: I support Bush in Iraq and Afghanistan 100%. My gut tells me if Mr. Bush would choose to nuke Iran, Korea or any other "evil" nation, Mr. Lamborn will not question him at all.
Health Care: he does an interesting job of trying to spin caring but he ends up saying: I do not believe in Hillary Care or Socialized Medicine and that the free market will solve it.
Pro Life, anti-gay and quite proud of his choices for the "family."
And by the way he admires Dr.Dobson and and said this about Dobson
"Dr. Dobson is a good and decent man who loves God and loves America. He and his ministry have positively impacted the lives of thousands upon thousands of people. I support the right of any religious group to participate responsibly in the public policy process and think our country is better for it."
Enough on Lamborn. But I need you to know the truth. All of you: especially people like Rep. Slaughter, Rep. Pelosi, Senator Kerry, Howard Dean and all the people in the democratic leadership who post here/read. We CANNOT ALLOW this man to represent this district. Please, don't shut us out because we live in a tough area. None of you believe we should ignore the plight of the inner city because things are tough and dangerous at times, and poverty abounds and problems are complex. I know you would never give up on people because of WHERE they live. Well, just because I live here, my democratic friends live here and the color red dominates should not make us invisible either. We will work hard. You need to help us and we can help you to take back America. Don't put us in a Catch-22 where you won't support financially until we show you we can financially do it ourselves. That's just silly.
Jay has all the qualities to be a great and effective congressman, especially his strong belief in the constitution being for ALL citizens. Jay is a retired military man and a veteran who served his country proudly and well. He has all the right moves, he is intelligent, fair and I know he would represent us well. Jay is the right man for this job. And he CAN WIN.
We, the democrats in CD-5 are working hard. We will do whatever it takes, walk the pavements, day and night, stuff envelopes hours on end to save money, and have bake sales. But we could use your support. While Lamborn and his people are going to be getting a lot of money, we are working hard for to get Jay the name recognition that will make a difference. That means television. That takes money. The sooner we do it, the better and YOU ALL KNOW what I am talking about.
For decades here, no democrat ever believed we had a chance. For the first time in years, a lot of us KNOW the reality.....we have MORE than just a chance. We have a GOOD CHANCE of winning. We need to get that message out. And that takes support and press. We need folks getting out here, giving money and speaking out! Help us take back one of the most beautiful pieces of real estate in the country. Go to Jay's website. Read about him. Read his stands on the issues. Ask him questions...there is an e-mail addy. Call his office. Give Jay and the citizens here the support to win and shock the country. It is just what Americans needs right now. A shock and a wake-up call for the believers.
I am just one person. I am a volunteer who is trying to do my part. I think we can do it. I want us to do it. I have 38 years worth of students out there who I want to have the chance to live in the America that is for all citizens, regardless of race, gender, sexual preference, religious preference or economic status.

I do not want family values defined by those who sponsored the crusades
I do not want my standards of ethics and morality determined by those who brought us the inquisition
I do not want justice, humanity or compassion defined by those who burned people at the stake or slowly crushed them to death as witches in the name of their God
Throughout the ages, these people have been the enemies of science, art, personal freedom, and free or expressive thought. They are at it again, and they are succeeding. Anonymous
