Front paged at My Left Wing
Good morning, and hope you had a Thanksgiving dinner that couldn't be beat! Welcome to Saturday Morning Garden Blogging.
Weather here in Denver has been up-and-down — 70 on Wednesday, 48 yesterday, with the cloud cover making it feel colder. Unfortunately on the "up" days, between Da Boys, Da Dadster and Thanksgiving, I've been occupied; I still have 15 unplanted lily bulbs hanging out in the basement cold storage area. Today and tomorrow are supposed to be in the 50's, with a cold front is coming in on Monday, so if I don't get the lilies in the ground today or tomorrow — which is doubtful — it will be at least a week before I get another chance.
The picture is recycled from Thanksgiving in Pueblo last year, the Fountain River, across the street from my beloved mother-in-law's home.
The cool down is not a bad thing, though. Once again, I have confused plants. I have California poppies and dianthus that have never died back for the winter. Thanksgiving morning I saw a johnny jump-up blooming. And the dutch iris have put up long leaves already. Jeesh; never know WTF is going to happen.
Because Thanksgiving fell so early this year, and because of the unexpected presence of the Dadster, my Christmas preparation schedule also is off. Usually I spend the weekend after Thanksgiving duck-walking in the storage area (it's about 4 feet high — deeper than a crawl space, but not nearly high enough to stand upright. I mean, we were digging that damned hole by hand; there was only so deep we were willing to go!). I retrieve the boxes of Christmas moose and other non-tree ornamentation and begin setting it out, and start re-arranging furniture to make room for the tree.
With the Dadster here, instead of having an extra week of Christmas prep time, the Dadster's massive suitcases and the folded-out futon bed are in the way. I have nowhere upstairs to stack the boxes and no space into which I can move furniture.
At least I managed to get the majority of the Christmas shopping out of the way — even managing to score a Nintendo Wii for Da Boys (the Wii has been my bludgeon over the past several months; bad grades, no Wii). Have some minor items to pick up, but most of the shopping is done and on the way. Then comes the wrapping and be-ribboning, and dealing with increasingly excited boys through the month of December.
So that's what's happening here. What holiday happenings are happening at your house?
