The president arrived today in Estonia to speak about foreign policy. He talked to leaders of one of America's most important allies about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Hold on- Estonia is an important ally? Actually, yes. The small former Soviet republic has troops in both wars, according to MSNBC.com. This is, to me, just proof of the obvious: the US has lost all credibility in foreign relations.
I decided that as an informed citizen, I should learn about America's leading ally. According to Wikipedia, the former Soviet republic is the 132nd largest country in area and the 151st largest in population. It's national colors are blue, black and white. Citizens speak Estonian. Their currency is the kroon, though in 2008, they will move to the Euro.
The head of state is the President of Estonia, currently Toomas Hendrik Ilves, a member of the Estonian Social Democratic Party, a socialist party. The head of government is the Prime Minister of Estonia, currently Andrus Ansip, a member of the Estonian Reform Party, a libertarian party, who recently replaced Juhan Parts, a member of the Res Publica, a conservative party.
Estonia is divided into fifteen counties. Their main trade partner is Finland. Estonians are the largest ethnic group, with Russians being a sizeable minority. The country is known for Estonian folk dancing.
That's a picture of an important US ally. Of course, the president's next stop on his trip will be Latvia, where he will be attending a meeting of NATO countries. I'm not even going to bother learning Bush is desperate about Latvia!
Bush is desperate, and he just wants to look like he's accomplishing something diplomatically. In truth, he probably doesn't know any of what I just told you.
