David Broder has decided, in his infinite wisdom, that one of Hillary's biggest problems in winning next year is Bill Clinton.
(Follow me over the flip)
The "dean of the Washington press corps" writes in tomorrow's column:
The former president's intervention -- volunteered during a campaign appearance on her behalf in South Carolina -- raised the second, and largely unspoken, issue identified by my friend from the Clinton administration: the two-headed campaign and the prospect of a dual presidency.
In his view, which I share, this is a prospect that will test the tolerance of the American people far more severely than the possibility of the first female president -- or, for that matter, the first black president.
Are the American people really that concerned about Bill Clinton being involved in a Hillary Clinton administration?
Of course not. Who says so? A story in Broder's own paper from last month, which polled actual voters:
Former president Bill Clinton has emerged as a clear asset in his wife's campaign for the White House, with Americans offering high ratings to his eight years in office and a solid majority saying they would be comfortable with him as first spouse, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
What evidence does Broder marshall against this actual poll of voters? One anonymous former member of the Clinton Administration. All righty then.
If he wants to be taken seriously as a journalist, shouldn't he at least engage this major story from his own newspaper, and this poll? Of course, his column does no such thing.
Seriously, this Broder drivel has got to stop.
