Recently, it seems that Sarah Palin has secured a photo op with former British Prime Minister, Baroness Margaret Thatcher.
Why on earth would the "Iron Lady" agree to such a thing?
More over the fold.
Baroness Margaret Thatcher, former PM of GB, was as formidable a politician as the UK has ever known. She had a powerful intellect, and could quote statistics at will to back up her arguments. She frequent confounded reporters by being far better versed in the nuts and bolts of government than they were, and was well known for flabbergasting even the most well-prepared hostile interviewer. She was astute, a quick study, never shied away from a fight, and has a 20 year career as an MP before she became PM. She was outspoken, and no one ever had to ask "Mrs Thatcher, where do you stand on issue X?". She made her views loud and clear, and backed them up with facts. She didn't suffer fools gladly, and left more than one of them sliced and diced on the floor of the parliament after a debate. She never backed down from a challenge, and was unafraid to do unpopular things for what she saw as the greater public good.
I didn't, and still don't, agree with some (most?) of her politics, but I have to give her props - she was damn good at her job. Which makes me wonder - what on earth is up with her granting an audience to Sarah Palin?
Well, in short - Thatcher has dementia, and has been slowly slipping away for about the past two years. For someone so intelligent and well read, it's a sad way to end. I don't know who in her family thought it was a good idea to set this up - but I hope whomever it is would realize what Maggie would think of Sarah and call it off. Since the Margaret Thatcher who was PM is essentially gone, she would simply be another Palin prop, someone whom she can bask in the reflected glory.
I have no doubt what Thatcher would think of Palin if she was in her right mind.
