Comedy Central host Trevor Noah did not hold back his thoughts on the heartless accusations that President Obama was not crying real tears in Monday’s televised press release and plea to the American people to end gun violence. Here is the tweet from Trevor Noah, containing a video clip from theDaily Show.
Here are excerpts from the show’s segment:
Trevor Noah: But in our main story, we talk about something we never get to talk about. Guns. Pointy pointy bang bang sticks. Laughter) In 2014 the United States saw a huge number of reported gun deaths. 33,599 to be exact.
Noah notes that 89% of Americans support universal background checks, yet not much progress has been made passing laws to restrict access to guns. Noah commends President Obama for taking action and notes the comments some of GOP presidential hopefuls made before the president’s speech—comments calling Obama’s actions a ruse, unconstitutional, and a power play. The comedy talk show host plays more of the president’s speech, then comments:
Trevor Noah: See that thing you're feeling right now? That pain in your chest, that comes from watching someone weep on national television, because he knows that society can do better than to file the shooting of children under “shit happens.”
That feeling? Is how you know that you are human. No matter how opposed to Obama's policies some people may be, or how cynical their politics, they have to at least acknowledge and respect the real authenticity of that emotion. Or so you would think.
Noah then sites Fox News commentators accusing President Obama of getting upset over gun massacres but not over terrorist attacks. One asshat even said we should check the podium for raw onions because Obama’s tears were “unbelievable.”
Trevor Noah: Are you [bleep] kidding me? Shedding tears when you think of murdered children is not really believable? You know what, there is something here that's not really believable. The fact that the rest of us have to share the title of human being with you. We'll be right back.
I think I can speak for the majority of the American public and say, “Thank you, Trevor Noah.”
