We have been deeply saddened by the events that have unfolded in Charlotte the last few days. The frustration of the black community has reached a tipping point and rightfully so. Again and again we see videos and read news headlines about unarmed African Americans being shot and killed by the police and this is not something we can continue to tolerate. It has to stop. We need to first heal from the wounds of this incident, get the facts, and begin to bring our neighbors back together. That said, we do not by any means encourage violent rioting, however, and hope that our neighbors can turn towards peaceful means for protest.
I also want to take this opportunity to address the deplorable comments made by my opponent, Rep. Robert Pittenger. His comments by no means are representative of where our district stands or where anyone in our state or country stands. We are simply shocked that a sitting member of the US House of representatives could say something so deplorable. We do not condone his words.
Pittenger has also helped give Hillary Clinton a clear path to victory in our state. In the last two presidential elections, the outcome has been decided by less than five points. Now, with Pittenger falling in line with Donald Trump, it simply widens the window for democratic victories here in North Carolina. Every time Pittenger or Trump says something racist, it simply gives democrats an easier path to victory in Novembor
As this election continues to unfold, it has become more and more clear we have two very different choices. We can not allow our country to be brought down by a congressman who believes that “black people hate white people.” This is not who we are. We have obvious social injustices occurring right in our city and across the country. We owe it to our neighbors to take these issues seriously. The time for change is now. I know, in the end, our campaign of positivity will prevail. I have said all along that this is not about me. It is about giving our neighbors hope, and making sure they don’t fear for their lives when they wait for their child to get off the school bus.
