Through the US Dept of Homeland Security (DHS), President Biden’s Uniting for Ukraine program efficiently and uncontroversially resettled 187,000 Ukrainian refugees on American soil since Moscow’s brutal invasion of her western neighbor. This successful program recently celebrated its second anniversary this week.
By way of background, on 21 April 2022 the Biden administration announced that an unlimited number of Ukrainians sponsored by Americans can come to the US and work legally without undergoing lengthy visa or paperwork processes. In two years, the US approved more than 236,000 cases under this program. Additionally, since Feb 2022 350,000 Ukrainians arrived to the US outside the Uniting for Ukraine process, mainly through temporary visas. The DHS link at bottom demonstrates the ease of the program.
Endnote:
America’s ally to the north instituted a similar program as well. The Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET) offers Ukrainians and their family members free, extended temporary status allowing them to work, study, and stay in Canada until it is safe to return home. Ukrainian refugees also receive a direct, one-time payment of CAD3,000 per adult and CAD1,500 per child (17 years and under). As of Nov 2023, 210,178 Ukrainians arrived in Canada.
