Of course there are current leaders of Iran, Israel, Russia, China, N. Korea, etcetera, who want democracy to fail in the United States. They have their own power agendas. They do not want their power limited by the concepts of equal justice and the rule of law.
Of course there are Arabs in Dearborn Michigan who settled into that area of the United States and then refer to the two major political parties as useful tools to their local power agenda that reflects a dilemma on foreign soil that their people have suffered forever through and have never resolved themselves. They too do not want their sense of power limited by the common sense notion of agreeing to disagree and getting along here on this soil with those they do not like, even hate.
Of course the proponents of the very subtly organized 2025 Project are manipulating every advantage against the middle so that democracy fails under the authority of a corrupt White Supremacist who will gladly deport all Arabs once he secures power in D.C. They feel all promise of power slipping away under the successful influence of a center out and truly inclusive Democrat presidency that reflects the multicultural humanitarian future our children are already naturally forming. They will do everything and anything to set us against each other.
Of course there are businessmen born elsewhere who come to this country to make their billions, then act as if everyone else here is an insignificant slave that is not worthy of the benefits that might come from "pernicious" taxation of those selfsame billionaires. They have an agenda that seeks the destruction of any We The People ideology.
Of course much of the Fourth Estate has become a click bait and switch whore game, well, for all the same reasons.
Note that it was news media and police that created the real conflict on campuses; two forces that act at the behest of the rich and powerful and not for the benefit of privileged kids testing the limits of their own social significance. At least here there is a real possibility that the truly democratic minded can grow to agree to disagree. Working out their parents' time worn curses will take time. But it is possible here.
From the context of this background, Hillary lost Michigan and many polls are suggesting Trump is winning Michigan. I believe the President needs to do what Hillary ignored and the traditional National Democratic Party has been weak at: campaign for democracy in the midst of the very "other" people in such a genuine and enthusiastic and enduring way that the conflicted others, the Arab in Dearborn, the campus protester, the BLM activist understand that they are a crucial part of preserving our democracy, preserving our shared nation, finding a mutually shared sense of peace and lawfulness here that is made a mockery of in all the failed states out there that so many fled from.
Great Democratic leaders in the FDR mold separate out the hopes and aspirations of the active voter from the conditions they always find themselves in, mainly the cliche monkey business of punching down by the proxies of the powerful to preserve for the disgustingly rich, in return for their favor, the best bananas and highest places in the tree while simultaneously maximizing their security by minimizing the potential backlash against their collective craven primate greed.
To defeat the cynical effects here of these domestic and foreign raw power players, Biden needs to not only show up for the Morehouse speech, he needs to lean deeply into the protest and listen to what the new generational grievances are. He must explain simply and honestly what his efforts have been. He needs to ask for help in making our union ever more perfect.
Failure to get with the many peoples, especially in vulnerable EC swing states, is to repeat the history of not only Hillary's mediocre arrogance but also the local Democratic politicians' anti-progressive survival-at-any-cost snark regionalism.
For their part, Arabs in Michigan need to know directly from the president what his and the nation's dilemma is as it relates to Gaza. He needs to take the opportunity to personally include them. Just as he did with the UAW on strike. Why the heck not? We are all Americans, right? The stakes here are for everything democracy cherishes. These are also Biden's people, right? They agree that Hamas is a terrorist organization they will not aid and abet and that Israel has an inherent right not only to exist but to defend itself by striking back fiercely against terrorist attack; at least the overwhelming majority of them do, right?
Make this truly "by for and of" The People, for the first time in our history ... All The People. Let the self-serving power mongers keep the malarkey they're trying to sell. Sneakers? Bibles? Guccione aesthetics? Toxic pimp masculinity? Cheap lies? Evil gods of destruction ? White Trash Supremacy? Enemy of my enemy buddy bonding?
The rest of us, the true Demos, have our democratic treasure and we will not surrender it, right?
Ultimately, anyone using Trump as a ideological/non-ideological cudgel to work out their deepest darkest grievance fantasies isn't going to make it with anyone anyhow … except for maybe some devils who want nothing less than the evil of destruction, the likes of which took our surviving fellow humans how many decades to recover from, starting way back there in the 1933 Fatherland?
Referencing one final bit of historical reality, the 2024 DNC in Chicago is right around the corner. You better be prepared, for all our sakes, Mr. President, because the darkly invoked demons of ignored history sure as hell will be.
