In case you were thinking about pulling the lever for The OT in November because “The OT is better for the economy”, think again. The Brookings Institution has published powerful research that democracies have stronger economies with higher per capita GDP growth than authoritarian regimes.
The differences are not small: “…democratization causes an increase in GDP per capita of between 20% and 25%.”
The article summarizes seven business types that will be most adversely affected if democracy declines in the US. As an example, here’s item #4:
“Businesses reliant on a highly educated labor force: Brain drain is already an issue in many states. Younger workers with high levels of human capital tend to gravitate to places with strong public goods provision and take political environment into account in their job searches.”
Just to add a little emotional punch, think about what will happen to the Federal Aviation Administration of Trump wins. He’s going to cut the federal bureaucracy and Boeing will have even less oversight. Who’s going to fly then?? How does that affect the profits of airline companies and any business that relies on travel??
