Regular readers of JMS' comments know that Mr. JMS has been out of work for a while. Well, that situation is about to be remedied shortly--however, during that period, I came up with a wish list of campaigns and political organizations that I might want to give money to, so soon it will be time to put my money where my mouth was.
While we can talk about specifics of who I might want to give to, we can also talk about which races make the most sense, which races are in reach, and which candidates are most worthy. If you would like to suggest a worthy candidate, go ahead.
Now keep in mind that I am what might be considered a very low dollar donor. We're not talking about thousands or even hundreds of dollars. I was one of those people who would throw Hoho another $20-$30 when I saw the bat go up, so I am not going to bankroll anybody's campaign, even for dogcatcher, but I like the idea of being a Democratic party benefactress, even if it's on a microscopic level--so I'm considering which candidates to support. And mind you, if I like what they are doing, I might give the $20-$30 repeatedly, as I did with Hoho.
My starting point is that I will definitely give some money to DFA and a relatively substantial chunk to Joe Hoeffel, who is after all running to represent me. I will probably give something to Allyson Schwartz, currently my State Senator, who is running to replace Hoeffel in PA-13.
Beyond that, I'm more flexible. I am considering loyalty contributions (like Jeff Seeman), symbolic contributions (like Richard Morrison), strategic contributions (like Ken Salazar), and of course when it comes down to giving the money, I'll make the final decision, but I thought it might be fun to talk about it. I won't consider anyone who hasn't gotten out of their primary yet, but otherwise go ahead and raise hitherto obscure candidates to my attention.
Oh, and as for the obvious--when and whether I give John Kerry or the DNC anything--maybe, sometime, but to be honest, I'm more interest in the individual races at the moment.
