Somebody claiming to be a representative of the Kerry campaign just called me at work to ask for more money. I have no problem with the campaign hitting up previous contributors for additional donations, but this guy was terribly uninformed and actually
lied to me during the conversation. It went something like this:
Caller: ". . . and you realize that the campaign can't accept donations after July, so it's really important . . "
Me: "What did you say about July?"
Caller: "The campaign can't accept any donations after July, and by then it will be too late. So, would a $100 donation fit your budget?"
Now, maybe he meant that the campaign can only accept donations for the Democratic Presidential Primary until July. I'm sure they don't want me to stop giving in July. They'll need a lot of cash between July and November for the general election.
I should have explained to the caller the difference between the primary and general election and that I can still give after July if I want to, but I just wanted to get off the phone. Besides, he should be educated about these things by the campaign staff before he's allowed to make any calls. The caller was so unprofessional that I started to wonder if he was really just a scam artist who'd gotten his hands on a donor list. If I wasn't so committed to removing Bush from office, this call could have turned me off to giving altogether. I sure hope my previous donations aren't going to pay this incompetent caller's salary.
Just so you know, I'll continue to send my modest contributions every month until November. I just hope this caller doesn't discourage too many other repeat donors.
