Representatives of
Peace Action Texas successfully lobbied to include language opposing conscription into the state Democratic platform. Now they report that these ongoing efforts have resulted in getting "language for a voluntary military into the national platform."
One of the people directly involved in the effort reports: "Kucinich and the media were both amazed that the changes we made were part of the actual platform, and not a minority report... We got language calling to reduce the troops in Iraq, references regarding an exit strategy, and support for repealing at least parts of the Patriot Act."
There's a writeup in the Texas captive media here (registration required)]. It says, in part:
Democrats decide platform, stay close to Kerry
Party approves report, focuses on security, mending global ties
The Dallas Morning News, July 10, 2004
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - If there are any doubts about the lack of difference between the John Kerry presidential campaign and the Democratic Party platform, consider that the platform title is a Kerry campaign slogan: "Strong At Home, Respected in the World."
...The primary pledge of the national security section is to improve global relations that Democrats say have worsened under Mr. Bush. On domestic matters, the platform - like Mr. Kerry - faults Mr. Bush for favoring the rich via tax cuts.
...Supporters of Mr. Kucinich, an Ohio congressman who has vowed to take his candidacy to the convention, were unable to get a party endorsement for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq. But they did note the platform pledges an "exit strategy."
"The language could be stronger, but we're pleased," said Karen Hadden, chairwoman of Peace Action Texas.
