I have no links about this because the only source I have is the free paper I get on the train (I saw nothing in the Inky or Daily News), but it appears that Curt Weldon's Democratic opponent
Update [2004-7-21 12:16:51 by JMS]: Greg Phillips, had to drop out because he was called to active duty in the Navy. I'm sure this guy was toiling down where Ginny Schrader was 3 days ago, but there's still something almost ironic about this. Anyone know more?
This also led me to realize that I know almost nothing about the congressional reps in my area. So I did some research. Here's are my impressions. Apologies if this is can be found in the kossopedia or something, but I thought it was interesting.
More below.
PA has 19 congresscritters.
- are Dems, 12 are Republicans
- (Mellisa Hart [R] PA-4) is a woman
Of the Dems, 2 are in the city of Philadelphia, 1 is Philadelphia suburb plus part of the city. 1 is in the city of Pittsburgh, and another (Murtha) near Pittsburgh. The other 2 dem districts surround Wilkes-Barre and Harrisburg.
There are 6 districts that could be described as the Philly suburbs (6, 7, 8, 13, 15, 16). While some parts are more conservative than others, the area overall is fairly moderate. We hold 1 of these seats. Yep--exactly 1. District 13 is currently held by Joe Hoeffel, and it shares part of Philadelphia. We have a pretty good chance of holding this seat with Allyson Schwartz.
The other congresscritters are:
District 6- Jim Gerlach--being opposed by Lois Murphy of the DK-8
District 7- Curt Weldon--entrenched incumbent who's opponent just dropped out apparently (above)
District 8- Jim Greenwood, who may be dropping out--being opposed by Ginny Schrader--nuff' said
District 15- Pat Toomey's old district! Who are we running here? If we can't find someone strong for this seat that we knew would be open a long time ago, the PA Dems in that area are probably not in good enough shape to field a big group of stellar candidates.
District 16 - Joseph Pitts--being opposed by Lois Herr of the Dean Dozens (go Loises!)
Thus ends the public service announcement.
