I was just watching my tape of the Bush video before his speech and I noticed that it began with this statement:
"About fifteen years before the Civil War much of the American West was Northern Mexico. The people who lived there weren't called Latinos or Hispanics, they were Mexican citizens. Until all that land became part of the United States..."
"until all that land became part of the United States?"
Is this for real? I'm quite dumbfounded. Someone help me out here. Is Bush trying to make some sort of parallel with Iraq here? Is he trying to make some sort of subtle justification for empire? Like the northern part of Mexico just magically became part of the United States? Was this supposed to make Mexican Americans reminiscent of Andrew Jackson's relentless campaign to annex Texas? What the fuck is going on here? This is some freaky scary shit.
