Well what a difference a year makes.
Just last year the people at Free Republic and all over the rightwing world were demanding, DEMANDING that there be more 9/11 memorials on television. Oh sure there was a whole week 24/7 on every cable news show and network, but dammit that was NOT ENOUGH. And anyone who disagrees that we should spend more time contemplating the fury and the devastation of that fateful day is a goddam terrorist. End of story.
Well I took a little tour this morning to experience some of the heartfelt memorials on the rightwing-o-sphere, starting with our own favorite caballero, Mr. Drudge.
[The following survey conducted at Noon Eastern Time, 9/11/04 - ed.]
NOTHING.
Literally, nothing. Drudge has not one word about 9/11 on his front page. Well it's still only noon his time, maybe he'll wake up and stick something on their later. I'll go check Daily Kos's "sister" site, Redstate.org...
NOTHING. Nothing on the front page and more troubling, not a single diary entry, not one, commemorating or remembering or even mentioning 9/11! Holy crap. Tsk tsk, tacitus. OK, I'll go to Free Republic's front page, they probably have a giant banner with a list of all the names and a-
NOTHING. Hmmmf. Well I'll just go check Andrew Sullivan, see what-
NOTHING. Okay, Newsmax! Newsmax has over 100 stories linked on it's front page. Surely at least one will be about-
NOTHING. Oh wait, here's a mention on Newsmax. It's an offer at the bottom of the page for a free copy of the 9/11 commission report - if you subscribe to Newsmax. Brrrnt!
Townhall - NOTHING. RushLimbaugh.com - NOTHING. Lileks - NOTHING.
And the final insult, the official Bush/Cheney 04 campaign site. NOT ONE MENTION OF 9/11! Then you go to their "blog" and it does indeed give a short itinerary of Bush's schedule and informs us that while September 10 and 12 are "National days of Prayer and Remembrance", September 11 is "Patriot Day".
So even though it's "Patriot Day", and the White House doesn't want me to, and Drudge, Redstate, Andrew Sullivan, Newsmax and the Bush/Vader campaign don't care... I'm gonna remember, pray for, and think about the fallen who lost their lives on 9/11, and the many Americans, Afghanis, Iraqis, and coalition forces who have lost their lives and family members because of this terrible, tragic incident.
May you all Rest In Peace, in a better world, amen.
