Grandview, Iowa -- A local Vietnam veteran has received an early Christmas present from a presidential candidate.
Raymond Cromer will have his name engraved and placed in the brick circle under the Huey helicopter at the All-Veterans Memorial here, thanks to Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. John Kerry.
Kerry stopped at the memorial in early August during his "Believe in America" bus tour through southeast Iowa. When Cromer was introduced as a fellow Vietnam veteran, Kerry asked to see Cromer's brick. But Cromer told Kerry he couldn't afford to buy one.
"Kerry tole me 'You will have one' and had one of his aides take dowm my name and other information," Cromer said. Yet, he was surprised to see the check for $50 this week.
"I got a letter about a month ago asking for more information, but I haven't had time to answer it," said the Tyson Foods Inc. worker. "I've been working a lot of overtime."...
..."I have all the respect in the world for Kerry," Cromer said. "He had his boots on the ground."
The check from Kerry's personal bank account is made out to the Louisa Area Vietnam Veterans with a memo: Memorial brick for Ray Cromer...
