If there is a constant to the right wing wind machine, it is that their pundits lie.
I don't mean that they look at the fact, select the ones that they like, and use this to buttress their arguments. Nor do I mean the pompous bloviating that they engage in when there is no clear data. I mean that they pull facts out of their asses and use selective quoting to show that someone is saying the opposite of what they are saying (it's a verb now, Krauthammer).
OP/EDs are not news. They aren't particularly time sensitive. You could throw a fact-checker at them by moving up the deadline by 24 hours, or by delaying publication to the next issue.
Look at Eric Boehlert's article on Safire. It's clear that this is not just a recent development. This has been a tactic of the right wing for over 30 years.
They make their arguments through bald faced lies, and perhaps its time to organize a letter writing campaign to lobby newspapers to fact-check their OP/EDs.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that is not a license to lie.
