List of Sinclair Advertisers...

Sun Oct 10, 2004 at 04:16:02 PM PDT

I have spent some time today compiling a list of companies that advertise with the Sinclair Broadcast Group. All of these companies have ads on the website of either a Sinclair owned and operated television station, or privately owned affiliates. I have only looked at the websites. I have only included national companies. I have not included any non-profit organizations. I have not included local companies. If you want to know what local businesses advertise on Sinclair stations, please go to this link to find out which television stations in your town are owned by Sinclair:

http://www.sbgi.net/business/television.shtml

I urge everyone to contact these companies and inform them of your distaste for Sinclair's decision to mandate all their stations broadcast a hour-long film, "Stolen Honor", which slams John Kerry's distinguished military service, and his courageous efforts to bring the war to an end upon his return. The website of the film is here:

http://www.stolenhonor.com/

With the exception of the NFL, I have not included ads for television shows that are aired on Sinclair stations as the producers of these shows rarely have any leverage over these matters. The NFL is listed because it is a corporation more than a TV show.

The list of advertisers is as follows:

* Indicates that this company had several ads on several different Sinclair websites.

Halls Fruit Breezers
Sylvan Learning Centers
Kentucky Fried Chicken
ITT Technical Institute *
Ford Motor Company
Yahoo DSL
Isuzu
Hardees
Taco Bell
Toyota
Warner Brothers * (many Sinclair owned stations are WB stations)
Century 21
Prudential
Zigzagzone.com *
Cnn.com *
General Motors
Geico
Pepsi
Mountain Dew
Titan TV *
Iams (this one breaks my heart, I'll tell you)
Miller Lite
Ringling Brothers (coming to Lexington, KY)
Oak Express
ABC Solutions
Kentucky Lottery
Florida Lottery
NFL
Lincoln Mercury

Pepsico could be a great target for protest. Not only are they are a frequent, clout-heavy advertiser on Sinclair, they are sensitive to Internet-based campaigns (see Patriotic Cans flap on Pepsico's website). Email BoardofDirectors@Pepsi.com ... or call the Pepsi board toll-free at 866-626-0633) ... or email Pepsi at webmaster@pepsi.com ...  or call PepsiCo International in Purchase, NY, direct at 914-253-2000.

KFC is another good possibility and may be especially sensitive to criticism because of the Pilgrim's Pride animal abuse incident. Check KFC website for info. Access KFC customer comment form at:  http://64.213.197.19/forms/irpt_Comments.asp

      •  First Thing Tomorrow - PHONE, EMAIL, PICKET!!! (none / 0)

Here's something to add to any complaint to a large corporate advertiser such as Pepsi or KFC (they HATE controversy). WaPo ran an article under the headline "Sinclair Stations to Air Anti-Kerry Documentary" quoting Sinclair vice president Mark Hyman, in commenting on the anti-Kerry film "Stolen Honor," as saying, "The networks are acting like Holocaust deniers and pretending [the POWs] don't exist." What an idiot! You don't reference the Holocaust unless you're talking about the Holocaust. It is inappropriate. It is offensive. If I were a corporate advertiser I would be furious at Sinclair, especially if lots of protests flooded my office or email box. Let's make it so!

        •  Sample Letter (to LOCAL Advertisers) (none / 0)

[can be adapted to fit national advertisers as well]

          Dear [NAME],

I was upset to learn that your company advertises on [CALL LETTERS OF STATION] owned by Sinclair Broadcasting Company, which has made the outrageously partisan decision to REQUIRE its stations to air an anti-Kerry movie called "Stolen Honor" about a week before the November election. Also, I have learned that Sinclair vice president Mark Hyman said, in a statement quoted by the Washington Post, "The networks are acting like Holocaust deniers and pretending [the POWs] don't exist ..." I very much resent ANYONE using the Holocaust to make a point when the subject has nothing even remotely to do with the Holocaust. It is inappropriate. It is objectionable. It is offensive to Jews and non-Jews alike. I hope that you will contact your Sinclair station manager immediately and voice your complaint. The Sinclair matter has been a major topic of conversation on a website that gets as many as ONE MILLION hits a day. And there has been much talk about organizing a boycott of LOCAL ADVERTISERS who continue to support Sinclair's partisan activities. Actions by responsible advertisers are needed now.

          Sincerely yours,

    •  Big business in urban areas (none / 0)

Picketing them in urban/heavy dem areas where they are greatly concentrated could do some serious damage.

Why would they volluntarily piss off half their customers? and it will piss off the other half to pull their ads. If I were they, I'd put major pressure on Sinclair to take me off the hook by dropping their plans to run this movie.

No matter how far down the wrong road you've gone, turn back.

Since I am a GEICO policyholder, I thought I'd start there.  I wrote this letter to their advertising folks, and left a message for their public relations people (or the other way around).  www.geico.com gets you there, and you can poke around for "contact us" link and it has numbers and e-mail links.

"I am a GEICO policyholder and have been for at least 10 years.  GEICO advertises on Sinclair Broadcasting company television stations.  That conservative company is running an anti-John Kerry movie just before the election.  This is unfair and undemocratic because Sinclair stations reach at least 25% of households and they are not providing any sort of balance for this obvious electioneering.  Moreover, I believe these blatant attacks violate federal communications and election laws.  I urge GEICO to drop its advertising with Sinclair, and/or to contact Sinclair and threaten to do so unless Sinclair drops its plans to try to effect this very important election.  Thank you."

AccuPoll Selects Quantum Communications as National Public Relations Counsel.
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- August 12, 2002 -- AccuPoll Holding Corp. (OTCBB:ACUP - News) through its wholly owned subsidiary AccuPoll, Inc., has retained Quantum Communications, Ltd. to provide strategic counsel and media relations.

AccuPoll, Inc. produces the AccuPoll voting system that combines the best features of touch screen electronic voting with a traditional paper ballot to produce a system that allows voters to verify that their intent has been accurately captured and confidence that their vote will count.

"AccuPoll needed a firm that understood the electoral process and had a successful history of working with the media. As AccuPoll launches its system, Quantum Communications is the perfect partner to help us tell our story about this exciting new technology," said Frank Wiebe, President of AccuPoll, Inc.

Charlie Gerow, a principal at Quantum Communications, commented, "I instantly realized that AccuPoll is unique and offers a simple but effective solution to the issue of clearly determining voter intent. By combining the advantages of modern technology with the reliability of traditional paper ballots, AccuPoll stands out as a distinctive and better voting system."

The introduction of the AccuPoll voting system comes at a time when Congress is poised to appropriate approximately three billion dollars for States to upgrade voting systems.

  •  Focus please! (4.00 / 3)

I'd like to request that if want to push hard on Sinclair then start organizing around local affiliates - start a "Sinclair Boycott - <City> <Station>" diary and start collecting local contact info for the station, their advertisers and any correspondence you have. There is already a diary for Sacramento KOVR. Once we have a few of these up, someone can post a diary to coordinate the separate affiliates. This is really, really, crucial: there are too many targets and too many things to track if we try to cram it all into one thread (and a new one each day). If you want to put pressure on Sinclair, start by organizing.

Ok, different rif: regarding how we interact with the Sinclair affiliates and advertisers, it's all about controlled fury. to wit: Remember - the affiliates and their advertisers are NOT our enemies.

    ...until we find out otherwise...

Remember that Sinclair is forcing their affiliates to play this propaganda piece. Approach the affiliates as potential allies - we want them fighting on our side.

This goes double for advertisers - assume they are on our side - we are, after all fighting for democracy, right? Approach them with respect and consideration for their very real economic interests (no one likes to have to cancel an ad campaign - remember that it screws up their business). They have a very legitimate reason for not canceling their ads - and importantly, we have a more important reason they should cancel their ads if the local affiliates don't fight this order. Try honey first, follow with vinegar.

...and if we find out that the affiliates have no spine or are so partisan that the can't see that this is an attack on our democracy, THEN we can turn up the heat on them, their advertisers, local papers, etc. But until they have a time to react, work on the organizational stuff that we will need to hit them hard: find out, and post, contact info for local media, all of their advertisers. Compose letters and plan for picketing etc.

I'm all for pushing hard, but don't let it spin out of control. Controlled fury.

  •  here's what I wrote to Miller, KFC and Taco Bell (none / 1)

I am disturbed to learn that your company advertises with Sinclair Broadcasting Company, who is planning to release a movie called Stolen Honor, a movie which slanders John Kerry just about a week before the election.  Unless you take action against this gross misuse of the broadcast airwaves, me and my friends will boycott your fine Miller products. And we're college kids, so you know how important we are to you're demographic. No more Miller light, no more Miller genuine draft, no more Red Dog. If you don't respond to this injustice, I will be forced to email all my friends and tell them to organize their colleges to boycott your products. I do hope you take action on this matter.

    Thank you

    Jared Bailey, Connecticut College

I sent it from my college email. This might get their attention. I sent the Taco Bell/KFC with their name instead of Miller. We college kids do enjoy a fine Chilupa every once in a while, but not anymore.

    •  XLNT Line of attack. (none / 0)

Miller has spent millions cultivating the college market for many years.....trying to get brand loytalty from the get go.  I'm sure they would be very concerned, very very concerned, if they came to realise that this investment is about to go up in smoke ..... if they perceived that the boycott was a college wide boycott and not just a couple of people here and there.....and the moreso if they believed this movement was spreading swiftly across the entire US college circuit.

Miller supports Bush and the Draft via Sinclair. Signs & posters anyone? Emails to other colleg e groups?

I'd especially like to see people who have to watch these stations to add on-air advertisers.

  •  Took me a while but... (none / 0)

I emailed most of their advertisers. Guys we gotta do this and get on board. Contact your elected Representatives, the FCC and John McCain (Sinclair is not high on his list) We gotta make noise the way the right does it. They write letters and make phone calls.

We gotta start using their playbook against them.

I recommend that all bloggers post about SInclair on their blogs with the list of Advertisers and encourage people to write and complain. Spread the word via email to your friends. This is wrong.

I also wrote Michael Moore and came up with an idea. See if Moore can arrange with some wealthy progressives (ala Soros), in conjunction with the Move on Members to pay the pay-per-view fee for F 9/11 the same day Sinclair shows "Stolen Honor". So that it free for anyone in the Sinclair markets to see if they want to. What's great about this is that Sinclair gets a couple hours in prime time. We end up owning the day.

  •  Don't forget MEDIA (none / 1)

As you're writing to Sinclair and the advertisers, don't forget to write a Letter to the Editor of your local paper.

The emails/calls/faxes to the companies could get lost down the memory hole. But if we make this a PUBLIC issue and pound it in the MEDIA, the advertisers will take notice.

  •  This is all good stuff (3.66 / 3)

But I still haven't been able to find where it's all listed in one place, organized, not piecemeal.

I put it up a sort of clearinghouse on Politick, my site, hopefully someone finds it helpful.

  •  Analysts (none / 0)

I emailed a few of the analysts who cover Sinclair.  Sean Butson from Legg Mason replied.  He was very polite and was very interested in the information.  He said he had received about 5 other emails regarding the issue, but he wasn't bothered by the fact.
  •  Multex or FirstCall users? (none / 0)

Can anyone who has access to institutional research through work monitor the analyst reports that come out on SBGI?

I'll bet that our pal Sean Butson at Legg Mason or one of the other analysts who cover Sinclair will be speaking with management today thanks to their mailboxes full of missives from the blogosphere.

I'd like to see the company's response and am willing to bet one of these guys puts out a research note on the company in the next several days. Any research that suggests these guys may be making a boneheaded business move will trigger a slip in the stock price. I'm curious how much slippage the investor base will tolerate before their Investor Relations department is swamped with angry phone calls.

They MUST have a bottom line. Everyone does. I think hitting them where it counts ($) is the best approach.

I used to have FirstCall/Multex access, but don't anymore so I'm relying on the dkos community to feed us the info...

  •  I will boycott these (none / 0)

I will not be buying any of the products made by these companies anymore unless they withdraw from advertising on Sinclair.

I've previously bought 3 Ford Vehicles. I will find a replacement company. We drink (or used to drink Miller Lite). I will find another brand. In my quests for fastfood I will steer clear of KFC and pepsi products.

  •  I just saw this - DNC files FEC complaint (none / 1)

Sorry if its old news. The DNC is calling a conference call today at 1:30.

DNC Files FEC Complaint Against Sinclair Broadcasting

    DETAILS:

Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) (DNC) Chairman Terry McAuliffe and DNC Legal Counsel Joe Sandler will host a conference call today at 1:30 PM ET to announce the DNC's decision to file an FEC complaint against Sinclair Broadcasting's illegal in-kind contribution to the Bush-Cheney campaign.

  •  another avenue? (none / 0)

I'm all for boycotting advertisers--although I'd advocate picking one who advertises nationally on Sinclair and making an example of them--but there may be other avenues of attack that may seem more threatening.  Call your local affiliates to find out when their license is up for renewal.  Send the public file written comments suggesting that the station has betrayed the public trust by politicizing the airwaves, etc.  Make sure, when you call the station, to let them know why you want their renewal information.
  •  I'm whoring my diary here. (none / 0)

I personally don't feel a boycott of advertisers is the most effective way of going about this.

Coming up with ammo against Sinclair and tying them to BC04 is better.  You can't really tie F9/11 to KE04 the same way, as Moore did the movie on his own.  The anti-Kerry film is coordinated with BC04.

It's also in our interests to talk about a license challenge: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/10/11/15145/066

  •  let's run F911 against it (none / 0)

Is it at all possible to buy up enough tv time in these markets to run F911 against it in the same time periods?  I wouldn't know how to go about doing this but I'm sure someone here knows how.
  •  I just want to add (none / 0)

That hitting the local advertisers is much, much more important.  Because of the nature of national ads on tv/radio stations, a national/global company advertising on a tv station is a completely different animal than a local advertiser.  National spots go through agencies who complete the purchase of airtime way ahead of time, and they do so based mainly on ratings.  GlobalWorldCo contacts National Agency, Inc. and tells them "we want to focus our ads on men aged 18-34." and National Agency, Inc. digs up the ratings and calls up Sinister Broadcasting Co. (or Clearly Challenged Broadcasting, etc.) in the applicable markets and the machine goes from there.  Because it's not a direct decision for GlobalWorldCo to broadcast on WSUX in Pig's Foot, Mississippi, it's a lot harder to track down whoever's in charge of making the decision.  Therefore, local advertisers are the key.

  •  Sinclair seems to be pulling a trick (or caving?). (none / 0)

I just looked at the Sinclair web page.  There's a message there that says:

"We welcome your comments regarding the upcoming special news event featuring the topic of Americans held as prisoners of war in Vietnam. The program has not been videotaped and the exact format of this unscripted event has not been finalized. Characterizations regarding the content are premature and are based on ill-informed sources.

"Massachusetts Senator John Kerry has been invited to participate. You can urge him to appear by calling his Washington, D.C. campaign headquarters at
    (202) 712-3000.

"If you would like to make further comments on this matter, you may do so at:
    comments@sbgi.net"

Is this a feint to convince people that there's no story here, and make people lose interest in boycotting?  Or are they actually backing off and trying to save face by claiming that they never intended to do what the LA Times said they were going to do?  My guess is it's the former.  But the fact that they felt the need to post this suggests that they have already begun to feel the heat.

  •  MOORE: GIVE FARENHEIT 9/11 TO A NETWORK!! (none / 0)

If they get away with airing this blatant campaign commercial, then I hope Michael Moore finds a way to let one or more of the networks, or PBS if possible, to air "Fahrenheit 9/11" instead of doing his pay-per-view plan.

  •  Columbus Sinclair advertisers (none / 0)

We have a frequently updated list of advertisers for Sinclair's (WTTE and WSYX) Columbus and national advertisers at Hypothetically Speaking http://www.loganselm.blogspot.com.

We have incorporated dirtgirls list from above.

  •  Contact the FCC (none / 0)

I think a comment to the FCC about the renewal of the several Sinclair licenses would be useful. People are supposed to comment about whether the station is fulfilling it purpose to serve the public. I couldn't find a direct link to the renewal comments. Perhaps, someone else will have better luck.

In addition I wrote to Sinclair and stated that this makes their stock a less desirable investment and that I would be contacting my mutual funds to recommend that they reconsider holding Sinclair in their portfolios.

If the board of directors starts to see the stock get bad press from the investment community there will be action. Money always talks.

  •  My email to Pepsico (none / 0)

Here is my email to Pepsico, cc'd to my local newspaper.

      Ladies and gentlemen:
I write as a (former) investor with regards to the
Sinclair Broadcast Group's forced airing of the propaganda
film "Stolen Honor", an attack film denigrating the record
      of Senator John Kerry.

Abusing FCC public broadcast licensing for the purpose of
forcing this kind of filth on viewers, then likening the
uproar of protest to Holocaust denials is unacceptible -
far, far, far beyond the pale.

Should Sinclair proceed to broadcast this film, and should
Pepsico continue to advertise with the group, I shall
boycott Pepsico products, and encourage every single
person I know to do the same.

      Good day,

      --Jason Piterak

ps: I am cc'ing this email to my local newspaper, the
multi-Pulitzer award winning Eagle Tribune, in the hope
that they might look into this matter.
