Dear Editor:
Last night John Kerry did a superb job of describing why he is best suited to lead this nation in the war on terror. By contrast, George W., showed that he is unwilling to do what it takes to keep us safe.
Senator Kerry rightly noted that we need to secure our highways, our rail lines, our ports, and our borders. He noted that 95% of containers coming into this country are STILL not inspected. He noted that we need to give our fire departments and police departments the tools to root out risks early and respond to crises when they occur.
The President's reply summed up his entire policy on Homeland Security: "I don't think we want to get to how he's going to pay for all these promises."
My I suggest, Mr. President--Billions in tax cuts for America's millionaires.
I was stunned. President Bush is telling us that we can afford to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on an endless, disastrous war in Iraq (which seems to be creating more terrorists), and squander billions more on a tax cut for the wealthiest Americans, but there's no money for vital domestic security measures? He promised us much more than that when he stood on hallowed ground three years ago, and he hasn't delivered. Osama Bin Laden is still at large, the military is overcommitted and under-funded in Iraq, and we are no safer here at home than we were on September 12, 2001.
I think the choice for security and leadership is clear - John Kerry.
Sincerely,
