Sully's (
http://www.andrewsullivan.com/) got this Kerry quote on his blog from a Kerry appearance on Larry King Live in 2001.
QUOTE FOR THE DAY: "But for the moment, what we are doing, I think, is having its impact and it is the best way to protect our troops and sort of minimalize the proximity, if you will. I think we have been doing this pretty effectively and we should continue to do it that way." - John Kerry, discussing the tactic of outsourcing the capture of Osama bin Laden to local warlords at the time.
Unfortunately, Sully's decided to use the sham journalistic tactics that he so loathes in everyone else. If you read the entire transcript (http://cnnstudentnews.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0112/14/lkl.00.html), you'll see that Kerry was responding to a caller's question about using Napalm or flamethrowers to "smoke (Bin Laden) out" of the caves.
Kerry responds by saying: "Well, I think it depends on where you are tactically. They may well be doing that at some point in time. But for the moment, what we are doing, I think, is having its impact..."
This is probably going to get some play on the evening news in about a day, because the Republicans eat this sh*t up. But in reality, Kerry's expressing that a) to use flamethrowers and napalm, our guys must KNOW where Osama is and must be CLOSE ENOUGH to him--both of which are obviously not the case; and b) that we may be doing the right thing tactically right now, but by the first part of the statement he seems to believe that our guys (US armed forces) should be closing the gap on OBL--not just the Afghan warlords.
